Positive Thinking – Can it Improve Your Health?

It is now official: the staff at the Mayo clinic posted an article on its website extolling the benefits of positive thinking — so there must be some concrete scientific evidence to back this up!

“Success-perts” have been playing up this concept for many years now, encouraging us to think positive thoughts in order to pave the way toward happiness, abundance, prosperity, and improved well-being. However, the Mayo Clinic writing an article about this lends more scientific credence to the concept.

The basics of positive thinking as well as positive self-talk are important to consider. Self-talk is that stream of conversation that is ongoing in our own heads. When most of your self-talk is in a negative orientation, then you are most likely a pessimist and your views on life and the world may be quite dismal. If your thoughts are the opposite — upbeat, joyful and positive — then you are an optimist. The outlook of the optimist is much brighter and happier and carries the potential of some remarkable benefits.

These health benefits have been the subject of scientific studies and more research is ongoing. However, it is currently believed that one of the main advantages of positive thinking may be an increased life span — perhaps we can literally think ourselves into living to a ripe old age!

Other possible benefits may include: lower rates of depression, improved resistance to illness, increased overall physical well-being, and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular causes.

The essential first step is to identify your negative thinking streams and reduce and remove this kind of head-talk from your repertoire! Once you are more aware of your habits, you can then consciously work to put a positive spin on your way of thinking. Here are some suggestions:

Infuse your life with a sense of humor. Being able to laugh away the negativity is a great tactic. It is perfectly okay to laugh at yourself in a good-feeling way. Exercise regularly. Besides improving your physical and cardiac shape, this can bring up your endorphin levels to a better-feeling mood fairly instantaneously (I think it is nearly impossible to feel sad while trucking along on the treadmill!) Follow a Healthy Eating Lifestyle — Improve your diet! Learn techniques to minimize (or eliminate) stress in your every day life. Some suggestions are relaxation breathing and meditation. Spend quality time with close, understanding, upbeat friends. This will help boost your happiness level. Volunteer for a charitable organization, if you have the time and inclination. Helping others and doing a “good deed” almost always makes us feel better about ourselves. Overall, be kind to yourself and use positive affirmations to focus on the great things about YOU. Anything that makes you feel good about yourself generally helps you stay healthy. Combining these positive living techniques may help us maintain optimistic thoughts as our predominant flow of self-talk. This will certainly improve the quality of our lives now, and perhaps improve the length of our lives as well!

Here are three affirmations for health:

I focus my thoughts, emotions and actions toward the most healthy outcome.

My inner wisdom guides me in the direction of vibrantly healthy life choices.

Vital life energy flows through my body creating perfect health.
